Yancarlos Diaz

Hey there, I’m Yan! Software Engineer by day, and Volleyball Coach by night. 

I grew up in the Dominican Republic and moved to New York in 2012. I started playing volleyball in high school and the sport quickly became my personality. I played club and studied Computer Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology before moving to the Bay Area in 2021. I started coaching at Academy in 2022 and haven’t stopped since! 

I have a passion for growing the sport of boys volleyball. That’s why I’m one of the only coaches at Academy who’s fully committed to our boys program. Outside of Academy, I led the Hillview Middle School boys and girls programs to championship wins in 2025 before moving on to coach boys at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo.

I describe myself as a life-long learner, which means I’m always pursuing a new degree or certification. In fact, I’m now a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Nutrition Coach. I’m happy to talk your ear off and debunk every strength, conditioning, or nutrition myth you’ve ever heard! 

Outside of work I’m a huge Broadway fan and Karaoke enthusiast. Ask me about any modern musical; I’ve probably seen it! You can also still find me playing an indoor or grass tournament at least once a month. I practice what I preach and strive to continue to improve my game every day!
